Water Leak Sensor

Detecting water leaks and flood conditions before they cause damage

Written by James Raine

The Water Leak Sensor sends an instant wireless alert to your Abode Hub the moment it detects water, whether from the built-in sensing pins on the back of the device or via the included extension cable, which can detect water along its entire cloth-covered length.

Parts overview

Part

What it does

LED Indicator

Quick flashes = connected to Hub; flashes every 20 min = lost connection; 1 flash/sec = alarm silence mode

Buzzer

Sounds locally when water is detected

External Water Probe Connector

Connects the included extension sensing cable for wider detection range

Function Button

Press once to pair; press once during alarm to enter 10-minute Alarm Silence mode

Built-in sensing pins

Located on the rubber back - detect water the device is resting in

Mounting Hook

Allows wall mounting with the extension cable

Battery Compartment

Houses the CR123 3V Lithium battery

Two ways to detect water

Built-in sensing pins (ground placement)

Simply place the sensor on its rubber back at floor level. The built-in sensing pins on the grey rubber area will detect water the device is sitting in. Make sure the rubber plug is firmly inserted into the top connector port when using this method.

Extension sensing cable (wall mounting)

The included 47-inch moisture-absorbing cable plugs into the connector on top of the sensor, allowing you to mount the sensor on the wall and run the cable along the floor to detect water at a distance. The cloth-covered cable detects water or any conductive liquid along its entire length.

TIP

Remove the pre-installed rubber plug from the top of the device before connecting the extension cable. The sensor will beep every 10 seconds until the cable is connected or the rubber plug is re-inserted — this is normal.

!

NOTE

The extension cable end connector is for joining additional extension cables, not for water detection. Water is detected along the cloth-covered length of the cable, not at the tip.

Pairing your Water Leak Sensor

1. Open the Abode app and navigate to the Devices tab. Tap "+" to add a new device.

2. Select "Environmental Sensors", then "Water Leak Sensor". Your Hub is now in Pairing Mode.

3. Remove the plastic battery tab from the sensor.

4. Press and release the Function button.

5. Within 2–3 seconds, "Water Sensor" will appear in the app — tap Add, name it, and tap Next.

6. When "Successfully Added" appears, your sensor is paired and ready.

Installing your Water Leak Sensor

Ground placement: built-in pins

Place the sensor flat on its rubber back at the location you want to monitor — under a sink, behind a washing machine, or near a water heater. No mounting required.

Wall mounting: with extension cable

1. Insert a screw into the wall at your desired mount height. The screw head must fit the mounting hook hole on the back of the device.

2. Hook the sensor onto the screw using the mounting hook on the back.

3. Remove the rubber plug from the top of the sensor and connect the extension cable firmly into the connector.

4. Run the cloth sensing cable along the floor to the area you want to monitor.

TIP

The extension cable can be joined to additional cables to extend the detection range further. Extension add-on cables will be available in a future update.

Silencing an alarm

Press the Function button once during an active alarm to enter Alarm Silence mode for 10 minutes. The LED will flash once per second during silence mode. After 10 minutes, if water is still present, the alarm will reactivate.

Battery

The Water Leak Sensor uses one CR123 3V Lithium battery. When the battery is low, a signal is sent to your Hub and you'll receive a notification in the app.

Replacing the battery

1. Pry off the rubber backing.

2. Remove the battery.

3. Press and release the Function button 5 times to fully discharge.

4. Insert the new battery.

5. Replace the rubber backing.

!

NOTE

If you're using the extension cable, unplug it from the sensor and allow it to air dry for at least 2 hours before reinserting it. Insert the rubber plug while it dries to prevent continuous beeping.
