First Alert Z-Wave Smoke/CO Detector Guide

Pairing the First Alert ZCOMBO with your Abode system

Written by Cath Smith

Abode integrates with the First Alert Z-Wave Smoke and CO Detector (model ZCOMBO, or SMCO410) to add whole-home fire and carbon monoxide protection to your Abode system. Once paired, smoke and CO alarms triggered by the First Alert device will trigger an Abode alarm, and if you are on the Pro Plan, will automatically dispatch the appropriate emergency services. You can also use the detector as a trigger in CUE automations.

!

IMPORTANT

The newer SMCO410 unit may require a Beta Firmware to pair correctly. Please contact support@goabode.com for confirmation.

What you need before you start

• An Iota Kit or Smart Security Kit Hub (the ZCOMBO uses Z-Wave and requires a Z-Wave compatible Hub)

• The First Alert ZCOMBO detector with batteries installed

• The PIN code printed on a label on the back of the ZCOMBO

TIP

Have the ZCOMBO in hand and locate the PIN code on the back label before you begin. You will need to enter it within 15 seconds during the pairing step.

!

IMPORTANT

You have only 30 seconds from the moment you insert and close the battery tray (step 4 of Inclusion below) to complete the pairing process.

Read all steps carefully and be ready to move quickly before you begin.

Overview of the pairing process

The ZCOMBO must go through two phases in order: Exclusion first, then Inclusion. Exclusion clears any previous network from the device so it is ready to join your Abode system. Even if the device is brand new, Exclusion is required.

Phase 1: Exclusion

Step 1. Open the Abode app and start Exclusion mode

1. In the Abode app, tap the Devices tab.

2. Tap the + button, then tap "Add Device".

3. Tap "Third Party Devices".

4. Tap "Z-Wave Exclusion Tool" and follow the in-app prompt to enter Exclusion mode.

Step 2. Exclude the ZCOMBO

1. Slide the battery tray open on the ZCOMBO.

2. Remove the batteries, then re-insert them, checking the correct orientation.

3. Press and hold the Test button on the ZCOMBO. Keep it held down as you slide the battery tray closed.

4. Release the Test button after you hear the first single beep.

5. In the Abode app, tap "Done". You should see Step 2 now shows two excluded devices: CO2 Alarm and CO Detector.

6. Tap "Done" in the app again. The app will move to the Z-Wave Pairing screen.

!

NOTE

Do not skip Exclusion even on a brand new device. The ZCOMBO will not pair correctly unless it has been excluded first.

Phase 2: Inclusion (Pairing)

!

IMPORTANT

You have 30 seconds from the moment you close the battery tray in step 2 below to complete pairing.

Have your PIN code ready before you begin this phase.

Step 1. Confirm the Abode app is on the Z-Wave Pairing screen

After completing Exclusion, the Abode app should already be showing the Z-Wave Pairing screen. If it is not, navigate back to Devices, Add Device, Third Party Devices to re-enter pairing mode.

Step 2. Pair the ZCOMBO

1. Slide the battery tray open on the ZCOMBO.

2. Press and hold the Test button. Keep it held down as you slide the battery tray closed.

3. Release the Test button after you hear the first single beep. (The 30-second pairing window starts now)

4. The Abode app will display a prompt with a 15-second timer asking for the PIN code.

5. Enter the PIN code printed on the back label of the ZCOMBO and tap Confirm Code.

6. Wait up to 1 minute. The Abode app will ask you to name the device once pairing is complete.

TIP

If the pairing prompt does not appear within the 30-second window, start again from Phase 1 (Exclusion). The ZCOMBO must be excluded before it can be included again.

What happens after pairing

Once the ZCOMBO is paired with your Abode Hub:

• Smoke or CO events detected by the ZCOMBO will trigger an Abode alarm

• If you are on the Pro Plan, the monitoring center will dispatch the fire department or emergency services as appropriate

• You can use the ZCOMBO as a trigger in CUE automations, for example to turn on lights throughout your home when smoke is detected

!

NOTE

The ZCOMBO cannot be added to your monitoring certificate automatically. Contact support@goabode.com after pairing to request that fire protection is added to your certificate. The support team will verify the device is paired before updating the certificate.
